ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Physical activity (PA) practice reduces the adverse effects of COVID-19. PA counseling promotes healthy lifestyles and prevents cardiometabolic diseases. AIM: To assess the trend in cases of PA counseling and the cardiometabolic disease between 2012 and 2019 (before COVID-19) in a southern Chilean region. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Records of Maule Region Health Service for 731.163 men, and 829.097 women aged < 10 to ≥ 65 years were analyzed. The average annual percentage change (AAPC) during the study period and the annual percentage change (APC) during intermediate periods, were calculated. RESULTS: There was a significant decrease in PA counseling in women in the study period (AAPC: −13.6%). In the 2012-2017 period a significant decrease in counseling for total, men and women were observed (APC: −18.1, −16.5 and −19.1%, respectively). Obesity increased significantly in total, men and women in the 2012-2019 period (AAPC: 10.1, 8.5 and 10.7%, respectively). The same trend was observed for hypertension (AAPC: 8.1, 8.5 and 7.6% respectively) and elevated blood glucose (AAPC: 10, 11.5 and 9.6%, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: In the study period PA counseling decreased along with an increase in obesity, hypertension and high blood glucose. Increasing PA counseling is a mainstay in the prevention of cardiometabolic diseases and probably to prevent contagion and complement the treatment of COVID-19.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Food environments largely determine the eating behavior of the population, which is why they are associated with the obesity epidemic. It is the responsibility of States to formulate and implement policies to intervene in obesogenic food environments. The success of the policies will depend on factors that act as barriers or facilitators. OBJECTIVE: To identify the barriers and facilitators for the formulation and implementation of public policies that address obesogenic food environments. MATERIAL AND METHOD: Secondary study based on narrative review. The identification, screening and selection of published articles was guided by the PRISMA diagram. For the identification, the electronic databases PubMed, Scielo, Scopus and Web of Science (WOS) were used, entering search fields and keywords. In the screening, duplicates were eliminated and inclusion criteria were applied. The methodological quality of eligible studies was assessed using the CASPe protocol. RESULTS: Qualitative studies that used interviews with key actors were reviewed. The barriers identified for the process of formulating policies on obesogenic food environments are the negative economic impact, lack of scientific evidence on the effectiveness of policies, influence of the food industry, weaknesses in coordination and technical cooperation. The identified facilitators are the political commitment of the States with international agencies, a joint work approach with the food industry and academic support. CONCLUSION: Policymaking to intervene in obesogenic food environments is especially limited by the food industry. It is relevant to generate scientific evidence of the impact that the implemented regulations have had on economic factors and on the health of the population. Collaboration between governments and the food industry could derive policies that, in addition to having a positive impact on the health of the population, would mean an opportunity for the private sector and the generation of employment.

ABSTRACT

Objective: Investigate the relationship between the member adherence profile and barriers perceived by university students to remain in the "Yoga: Awaken ONE" Extension Program. Methods: Two cross-sections were carried out with university students from the Federal University of Recôncavo da Bahia. The first was composed of 16 individuals and investigated the demographic, socioeconomic, anthropometric, physical fitness, and quality of life profile of university students joining the Extension Program. The second aimed at identifying the barriers to remain in the program faced by 13 students (out of the initial 16) who had withdrawn from the Program four months after the beginning. Results: There was a predominance of female individuals, from undergraduate courses in Physical Education and Pedagogy, and from the C socioeconomic class. Most participants had adequate body fat indexes. There was a large proportion of individuals with low flexibility and muscle strength. For quality of life, the lowest median was observed for the environment domain, while the highest could be noted for the social relationship domain. The main barriers perceived for the practice of yoga by university students were "long study hours" and "long work hours". There was a correlation between sociodemographic profile, obesity indicators, hemodynamic variables, flexibility, muscle strength, and QOL with the perceived barriers to stay in the "Yoga: Awaken ONE" university extension program. Conclusions: These findings suggest that the profile of the university audience can be a determinant for the permanence or dropout of programs that promote physical exercise and therefore, it should be taken into consideration in proposals for university extension programs.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Objective: to analyze the management of overweight and obesity in children and adolescents by nurses of the Family Health Strategy. Method: this is a study of convergent parallel mixed methods, developed in Health Centers of a municipality in northeastern Brazil. In the quantitative stage, data were collected from a questionnaire applied to 98 nurses and analyzed by descriptive statistics. For the qualitative stage, semi-structured interviews were conducted with seven nurses, interpreted by inductive thematic analysis. The quantitative and qualitative results were integrated and presented by a joint display. Results: most nurses rarely checked waist circumference (77.6%), dyslipidemia (55.7%), blood glucose (42.3%), and neither evaluated blood pressure (75.3%). In the qualitative results, we identified that there are nurses who did not classify body mass index according to sex and age. As for medical tests, the requests were mainly related to the routine of childcare. Guidance on physical activity and diet were given in a basic way or attributed to other professionals, and referrals to other services or professionals were not followed up. Conclusion: it is imperative to train nurses for the management of overweight and obesity in primary care for children and adolescents, with a view to quality of care for the prevention of comorbidities.

ABSTRACT

Non-communicable chronic diseases(NCD)have become the main burden of disease in China, which cause great challenges to public health and social development. Unhealthy diet is one of the main risk factors of the occurrence and development of NCD. Based on the latest international understanding of various forms of malnutrition and National Nutrition Survey and Monitoring in China, this paper describes the change trend of low weight, overweight and obesity in different age groups and highlights two classic cases: the diabetes research of Daqing in China and NCD prevention and control project of the North Carolina Project in Finland. The article concludes that dietary nutrition intervention is a cost-effective and sustainable key measure to prevent and control NCD.

ABSTRACT

As food preferences and eating habits form early in life, the development of healthy eating habits in early childhood is a way to prevent diet-related diseases. The dietary pattern approach examines the effect of an overall diet on health outcomes, instead of individual foods or nutrients, thereby presenting a comprehensive evaluation of children's dietary intake. This article reviews the current literature to summarize the main methods for assessing dietary patterns and explore relationships between children's dietary patterns and obesity, puberty onset, cardiovascular diseases, and neurodevelopment. The purpose of this review is to provide evidence-based support for reducing the risk of diet-related diseases in children and recommendations for future research directions.

ABSTRACT

The incidence of obesity in our country is increasing year by year. Diet and lifestyle interventions are the most commonly used weight loss measures, but their intervention effects are affected by individual genetics, environment and other factors. Genome-wide association analysis has found many SNPs related to weight loss, and explored the interaction between these loci and diet, intestinal flora and other environmental factors. This article summarizes the study of single nucleotide polymorphisms, the analysis of gene-environment interactions related to diet interventions for weight loss, and the multi-loci analysis and prediction models such as genetic risk scores and machine learning modeling in weight loss, which provides reference for the further application and development of the precise nutrition in medical weight loss.

ABSTRACT

The paradox of obesity and metabolically healthy obesity are being challenged. More and more studies have disputed the potential mechanism and prognostic value of metabolically healthy obesity. The study of metabolically healthy obesity is helpful to clarify the potential causes of obesity paradox and the potential mechanism of different degrees of obesity harm to the population. From the perspective of evidence-based medicine, combined with the relevant literature at home and abroad, this study reviewed the new understanding of metabolically healthy obesity, lifestyle factors, the impact of fat factors on metabolically healthy obesity, and the new opportunities of metabolically healthy obesity research, in order to explore whether metabolically healthy obesity can maintain and gradually reduce weight for a long time, so as to improve cardiovascular disease In order to achieve the purpose of primary prevention of related diseases.

ABSTRACT

Obesity and related chronic diseases have become major public health problems in China and in the world. While a series of prevention and control policies and action plans have been implemented in China, obesity and related chronic diseases have not been effectively controlled yet. The Obesity Prevention and Control Section of the Chinese Nutrition Society facilitated the cooperation of 34 interdisciplinary leading experts in drafting this consensus based on the latest relevant guidelines and research results in China and from overseas. The consensus report aims to help guide the prevention and treatment of obesity in China, promote the participation of the whole society and contribute to 'Healthy China' national goals. This report includes seven chapters. It outlines the prevalence and main contributing factors of obesity, challenges, obesity screening and diagnosis, treatment, prevention and control during the whole life cycle, comprehensive prevention and control strategies involving the whole society, and recommendations for future work in China. This report will help promote obesity prevention and weight management efforts in China to be more scientific and effective.

ABSTRACT

There is growing evidence that obesity acts as an independent risk factor for Covid-19. Obese patients have higher incidence of complications, hospitalization time and risk of death. The objective of this paper is to describe the relationship between obesity and severe forms of COVID 19, as well as to expose the possible mechanisms involved. A review of the world literature and national publications referring to obesity and COVID-19 is carried out. The characteristics that make obese people more susceptible to being infected by SARS-COV-2 and having a worse prognosis are identified. It is concluded that obesity constitutes a permanent challenge in our environment. Early and timely prevention would allow reducing hospitalization times, unfavorable evolution and mortality due to severe Covid-19(AU)

ABSTRACT

The high prevalence of obesity in Chile, and its increasing trend, constitutes a Public Health problem due to its association with chronic non-communicable diseases. During the 2010-2020 decade, the state of Chile implemented nutritional intervention strategies aimed at maintaining or reducing the prevalence of obesity. Regulations such as Law 20.606 on the nutritional composition of food and its advertising to modify food environments, Sistema chooses to live healthy System "EVS" Choose Healthy lifestyles as an intersectoral management model made up of policies, plans and programs prepared and executed by different State agencies, intended to contribute to healthy habits and lifestyles and to prevent and reduce risk factors and behaviors associated with non-communicable diseases. Despite all efforts, population surveys have shown that obesity continues to increase throughout the life cycle, which is why it is necessary to strengthen existing strategies, but with a focus on social and health determinants in all policies, since in turn, improve the evaluation systems of the strategies implemented in the population, measuring their impact, in addition to their implementation.

ABSTRACT

Background: A massive open online course (MOOC) is an online course aimed at unlimited participation and open access via the Web. Aim: To assess the MOOC experience for teaching nutrition, healthy food consumption, physical activity and health promotion to prevent obesity. Material and Methods: Two MOOC courses, (one with two versions), are described with the registration and evaluation instruments such as surveys carried out at the beginning and at the end of the courses. Effective participants in the three versions were 17.456, 11.121 in MOOC1, 2.351 in MOOC1 second version and 3.984 in MOOC2. Their median age was 31 years, 82% were women, 60% were professionals and 12% were foreigners. Results: In the final evaluation of the three courses, 85% to 99% qualified as "very good" or "good" all the surveyed topics. Thirty five percent of participants reported having lack of time, 11% reported problems with internet connectivity and 3.9%, personal or work problems. Conclusions: This is the first experience with MOOC in health and nutrition to prevent obesity in Chile. Considering the good results and positive evaluation of these courses, we estimate that they are an important tool to prevent obesity and chronic diseases in Chile, Latin America and other regions of the world.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Background: Obesity has repercussions on functional capacity (FC). The six-minute walk test (6MWT) is a useful tool for assessing submaximal FC, and the distance reached at 6 minutes of walking (D6MW) is a relevant prognostic marker. Objective: This paper aims to establish a reference equation for the distance predicted in 6MWT in obese Brazilian subjects. Methods: This study included 460 patients (306 women), with a body mass index (BMI) > 30 kg/m2, 71% (328) of whom presented a grade III obesity (BMI ≥ 40 Kg/m²) and were evaluated with 6MWT. Heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen saturation and Borg scale perception of effort were recorded before and after the 6MWT. For statistical analysis, Kolmogorov-Smirnov tests, an unpaired T-Test, Pearson's correlation, and multiple linear regression were used, together with a significance level set at p<0.05. Results: Gender, age, and BMI were significantly correlated with D6MW and were identified by multiple linear regression as the best predictors of the D6MW. Together, they explain 48.7% of the D6MW variance for obese Brazilian subjects. Based on these findings, an equation was proposed - D6MW = 930.138 + (27.130 x Genderfemales = 0; males = 1) − (5.550 x BMI kg/m2) − (4.442 x Age years). When the average of the D6MW obtained with the above equation was compared to the average calculated with the equations described in medical literature for healthy and obese individuals, the latter tended to overestimate the D6MW. Conclusion: The proposed reference equation exhibited better assessment of FC in obese Brazilian patients, providing proper subsidies for the follow up ofinterventions in this population..

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Overweight and obesity in childhood and adolescence have increased worldwide in recent decades. This fact is associated mainly with a lack of physical activity, unhealthy lifestyle habits and eating behaviors. Objective: To analyze the effectiveness of different school intervention studies carried out in Spain to prevent and treat obesity in boys and girls. Methods: An electronic search strategy was carried out using the PubMed, Medline and SPORTdiscus databases, under the terms school-based intervention, Spain, healthy lifestyle, obesity prevention, physical activity, nutrition, childhood obesity and children obesity. 124 articles were identified and only 11 met the inclusion criteria. Conclusions: The interventions carried out by school were not effective or significant to change the anthropometric indicators of Spanish children and adolescents. However, school interventions, together with family involvement, can be effective in modifying changes in nutritional habits, level of physical activity and healthy lifestyle habits in the infant-juvenile stage, since they are the main determinants of obesity in childhood. Finally, establishing an adequate lifestyle early can prevent obesity and overweight in adulthood(AU)

ABSTRACT

This rapid review was commissioned and subsidized by the Ministry of Health, within the scope of the GEREB-010-FIO-20 project and is part of the "Rapid response for health promotion" Collection. Context: Chronic Noncommunicable Diseases (NCDs) are among the leading causes of mortality in the world. Type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2), systemic arterial hypertension (SAH) and obesity are considered public health problems with high prevalence in poor countries. Physical activity can be a protective factor for NCDs, helping to prevent and treat diseases and functional disability, by reducing body adiposity and blood pressure, improving lipid profile and insulin sensitivity, among other benefits. Question: Which physical activity interventions are effective for controlling diabetes, hypertension and overweight/obesity in Primary Health Care (PHC)? Methods: Eight electronic literature databases were searched in May 2021 to identify systematic reviews (SR) on physical activity interventions to control or improve diabetes, hypertension and overweight/obesity. Using quick review shortcuts to simplify the process, data selection and extraction were performed with subsequent evaluation of the SR quality. Then, the results were gathered in narrative synthesis according to similarity. Results: The search returned 633 unique references, which after selection resulted in the inclusion of 6 systematic reviews, all with critically low confidence in the assessment of methodological quality. Most studies were carried out in Asia and North America, with emphasis on China and the United States. A systematic review included studies carried out in Brazil. The protocol of this review provided for the inclusion of studies carried out in primary health care services, but during the selection process it was necessary to expand the eligibility criteria, as no studies restricted to PHC contexts were identified. Some SRs also included the group of comparators involving physical activity and healthy volunteers. The results were presented in three categories according to the condition analyzed: hypertension, diabetes mellitus 2 and the three conditions combined (SAH, DM2 and obesity). The studies involved the following interventions: practice of tai chi chuan; resistance and/or aerobic training; aerobics, strength training and lifestyle education; yoga; water aerobics, strengthening, stretching and Baduanjin training; use of activity monitors (accelerometers or pedometers) and progressive resistance exercise; pedometer with physical activity. Most of the results showed positive effects (mean blood pressure; effective control of blood pressure - BP; reduction of systolic (SBP) and diastolic (DBP) blood pressures; improvement in the measurement of glycated hemoglobin; significant decrease in body mass index - BMI ), also indicating uncertainties regarding some outcomes. Conclusion: The SRs that evaluated hypertensive patients indicated a reduction in BP with the practice of physical activity, but the certainty of the evidence was low in one of them. The use of activity monitors did not result in an improvement in the indicators of patients with DM2. One of the RS indicated that resistance exercises improved the measurement of glycated hemoglobin, but had no effect on the body composition of patients with DM2 and overweight. The use of pedometers in an SR was associated with a decrease in BMI and SBP in patients with comorbidities. The included studies should be evaluated with caution, as they had methodological flaws that compromise confidence in their results.
